As an RA my upgrades were very often unimpressive, and nothing much changed when i was demoted to Ambassador - except they no longer invite me to the lounge. If I make a fuss they'll give me breakfast downstairs, but I find the business of begging for breakfast a little
infra dig and here's plenty on offer just outside the hotel. I continue to stay there when the rates fit my budget simple because of familiarity and (for me) the excellent location.
When the receptionist started pulling out the "gift" and plonking it on the counter i felt able to refuse it in the same casual way. The gift is no deal breaker
