GH is a very nice hotel but I prefer the Andaz.
I'm not sure why you would not want to leave the hotel. The gaslamp is great and not particularly expensive (at least by CA standards). If you really want to not leave the hotel I would suggest a resort-type property (which you are not going to find in San Diego)
GH would be my favorite -
Great Pools (one for family one for adults)
Great Lounge
Great Upgrades
Great Breakfast
Comp Parking (AFAIK Andaz does not comp it for globs on award stays).
As far as staying “on property” I would consider the village an extension of the property which has some cute shops and fun activities for families. The GH provides vouchers for complimentary bikes and even a harbor tour (5 minute walk from GH).
