I flew SFO-OTH on a United CRJ in early May 2022 and had a terrible experience with checked golf bags. In summary, the flight was full of 50 golfers, most with checked golf bags. Before boarding the gate agent announces they need 7 volunteers to take other flights in order to lower the weight. After a few mins, 7 guys approach the desk and it appears we have a solution. Shortly after, the gate agent announces "we spoke to the pilot and we'll be able to get everyone onboard after all". Cheers erupt in the boarding area. All 50 people board, flight is fine, but upon arrival in OTH about 1/3 of the golf bags don't arrive on the baggage carousel. They were never loaded in SFO. So UA got us all there, but didn't mention many of us would be without our suitcases and golf bags.

UA did arrange for delivery of the missing luggage to Bandon Dunes, but they didn't arrive until after 10:00 the next morning which caused us to miss the afternoon round the day we arrived and the front nine the next morning. In speaking to people who worked at the airport, the resort, and even the guy who delivered the clubs it was clear this is a very common occurrence and United didn't plan on how many golf clubs they were going to carry when calculating the weight of these flights.

So plan accordingly. I'd strongly suggest shipping your clubs with ShipSticks or another delivery service if you're flying a regional jet to OTH.
