I did similar Star Alliance redepmtions on LH F from HND-FRA-IAD as well as NRT-ZRH-EWR on LX C, but thouse seem to be rare these days (was UA miles in both cases going that 'reverse direction').
Just strung two one way award tickets together. I had a project to work on that required uninterrupted time and this seemed to be (and was) a very pleasant way to find that time. It entailed an overnight layover in HND. Thankfully, the JAL lounge was open until 1:30 am and reopened at 6 am, so the time out of the lounge was minimal. And if you have to spend a night at an airport, you could do far worse than HND Terminal 3.
