I've experienced this on many airlines at many airports.
The default rule seems to be, if you leave the lounge one minute after it switches to "boarding", odds are you will see "final call" while walking (or running) down a moving walkway while looking at the display boards off to the side. Then when you get to the gate, there's a huge long queue. Possibly boarding hasn't even started.
And while I'm not a world-class sprinter, I'm also not using a cane or a walker - I would say I'm in the top quartile of fast walkers.
