With parents having wheelchairs requested, it should not be an issue to ask and receive a gate pass to accompany them to the gate.
I have done the same at IAD (but not with United), RIC, and ORF.
I don't believe you'll get the benefit of Pre-check though (I never have in these cases), at checkin they will simply ask for your drivers license or other ID, and then enter that info into the system to issue you a gate pass, so you would go through like a non-precheck passenger.
