It sounds like you had a fare that included a discount for round-trip travel. If your outbound was ORD-ABE, e.g., then you've turned a round-trip ORD-ABE / ABE-ORD flight into ORD-ABE / ORD-EWR. That won't price as a round-trip because you're departing ORD for both segments.
On the other hand, if you try applying the credit to EWR-ORD instead, you'd get ORD-ABE / EWR-ORD, which is a valid round trip (with an "open jaw" -- ground segment -- from ABE to EWR). Most UA round-trip fares allow an open jaw, so I suspect you'll be able to recoup most, if not all, of the $103 in this manner.
