How to use flight credits for partially used itinerary (cancelled during trip)?

I know a question was asked recently in regards to future flight credits on a partially used ticket, but was curious to know if anyone knows on how it should be applied?

I recently had to cancel my return flight (ABE-ORD) after flying the outbound flight and was told by a rep that I’d have a $103 future flight credit to use. Ok, great.

Fast forward to tonight, I go to book a flight (ORD-EWR) for $173 then on the checkout screen I’m able to apply the $103 credit for total of $70, but get an “error” for my credit card.

So I call in to see if an agent can help and they tell me I’d have to pay $169 for that ORD-EWR flight and that’s after my credit is applied. Said something along the lines of needing to reprice the whole itinerary which came out to $376 and they subtracted $207 (the full price of my original flight).

So does anyone know if what the agent told me is correct? I couldn’t anything on their website in regards to this scenario. It doesn’t feel quite right logically to me and differs from what I was originally told by rep as they made it sound like it would just be a $103 credit I could use at my discretion.

Thanks!
