Here is my 2 cents - I would call Amex and speak to fraud prevention and explain the situation - if an on-line interaction does not produce the desired results, my next step is to call. I always ask for the name of the person I am speaking to and any other type of identifiable information, such as a case number. More than once, having a "paper trail" has been my saving grace - YMMV
