Lounges are overflowing far more than before COVID, and it appears to me that upgrades are now much harder to secure in advance than before COVID.
My unscientific thoughts on this:
- I think some lounges are still operating at less than "normal" capacity, which may be creating some of those crowding issues. I also suspect there are far more people running around with credit cards granting lounge entry, which is a separate but tangentially related issue.
- I found it very hard to get upgrades to clear before Covid, so I'm not sure there's much of a change there. FWIW, my last few international flights had empty J seats and my flight YYZ-YEG earlier this week had NO passengers in J. On the other hand, my next two international flights (to SYD and to ZRH) were both sold out in J weeks before departure.
