I disagree with that. At the gate, maybe not (although if they're booked in a higher cabin than you, they might). But now AC does Latitude reward fares, we've seen countless newbies around this board looking at leveraging those plus their new eUps to clear in to J when they book. If they're clogging up J cabins, that may mean fewer seats for SEMMs to upgrade in to, whether at the gate or beforehand.
EDIT: of course, in the 20 minutes that I was writing this post off and on, the cow already made the same point and you responded, so perhaps this is moot.
