You would have been allowed to go either minus 3 days early or upto 14 days later (as a minimum, arguably more than that) via the Standard Rebooking Policy. That applies to redemptions too. You're only allowed one change per irrop hence it's best to check here first if you don't know all the different policies in this space.
I THINK I sorta knew that. But the other aspect is that I really didn't think it through completely. However, with BA, it's also possible that this new itinerary could have changes imposed upon it. If THAT happens, I might very well follow your advice, and fly one day and stay the night at LHR, and fly the balance the next day.
With THAT in mind, have you/would you stay at the Sofitel? I gather it's the only hotel that's walking distance to Terminal 5.
