Amex handed out lots of Amex Platinum cards in the last year or so, with huge signup (and upgrade) bonuses, and sometimes waived first year annual fees. I also think that people are splurging a lot more on travel this year, which means more guest swipes. I'm sure that the current huge elite status population isn't helping either (since Golds and above can get in on international flights).
