Through checking bags BA-BA on separate bookings

My reading on here of this was that this was against the rules and not possible.?

I travelled NCL-LHR-LCA and back this week with the NCL-LHR-NCL and LHR-LCA-LHR bookings being separate (avios and cash bookings respectively).

At both ends the agents offered to through check our bags. We declined on the way out as had some baggage rearranging to do, but accepted on the way back and they indeed ended up in NCL.

A couple of thoughts:

The two bookings weren't linked at all so I assume this must have been done through looking at my BAEC profile? This wasn't easily possible when I last sat behind a BA check in desk (many moons ago in the old DCS/PRS days).

Has the no through-checking thing been waived for the time being to try and reduce queues in T5?
