Will remember the tip about extra sturdy boxes for the future. Unfortunately, no standard shipping box is the right size. But I did find a box the right size from a recent purchase. As much padding as I can fit inside.
I'd line the inside with a bag and just roll the open end onto itself. The TSA will open the box and the only thing that they do worse than their regular job is repacking.
