Thanks all for the suggestions. I was thinking plastic wrap to protect from rain on the tarmac. Perhaps lots of packing tape on corners and edges will be fine.
Will remember the tip about extra sturdy boxes for the future. Unfortunately, no standard shipping box is the right size. But I did find a box the right size from a recent purchase. As much padding as I can fit inside.
