I don't know what kind of box you're using, but stores like Lowe's and Home Depot send both standard and extra-sturdy boxes. I used to frequently fly with boxes to Bermuda (I worked there, and did a lot of my grocery shopping in the States) and the heavy-duty boxes were much more likely to make it unscathed. I never used platic wrap though.
