Not an issue with a box checked as luggage. Be aware that:

1) They may/will ask you to sign the waiver for liability of content, since they don't consider cardboard boxes as protective as standard luggage.
2) Use the extra wrapping to protect your item instead of the box. The box will traverse through the automated sorting systems at the airport, and those sorters push with significant blunt force. It was strong enough to crush my large bottle of wine that was packed in wine shipper box that is designed for shipment.
3) TSA loooooves to inspect boxes to meet their quota.
4) AA has their own fragile label, which you can request.
