The few times I've flown economy on an airline where I didn't have status I've always payed for E+. It's been a while but I think about 4-5 years ago I paid $100 or so for MCE on an AA transcon. No regrets; well worth it. This is why I value status so highly; I will pay for those seats if they are not free and that really adds up.
