Free upgrades is a crap shoot. Available seats could still be purchased by someone with cash or SkyMiles. And someone with higher status checking in to the flight before the flight manifest is closed off, can kick you out of contention. Think of an available seat being better described as 'possible' as an upgrade move for you but not 'probable'. It is a free benefit but not one that can be counted on.
