Example 2 (a few days ago): Was flying PHL-CLT-XXX in J. PHL-CLT was way late and I only had 20min for the connection. Got to the gate at around T15, boarded CLT-XXX no problem. Standby list for CLT-XXX was at least 30 people deep.
I don't recall anything like this ever happening to me, either. I frequently have tight connections and actually often prefer to board late. I don't think I've ever found myself un-checked in and without a seat assignment... that would be quite disconcerting!

Agree -- I've never sent a complaint this long to AA. I'll help him write one that's much shorter. Just wanted to provide full details here.
