Maybe the problem is mainly a Gatwick issue?
No - Heathrow has it's share of the same thing too!!! However, there are some factors which will inhibit self-service kiosks from completing OLCI:

1. If the computer decides (at random) that the credit card used to make the booking is required, and it has not been made available (or a different card inserted) to the self-service kiosk.

2. If a change of booking has been made and the additional fee has not been collected.

3. If an infant is shown in the booking (this will shortly be addressed so that complete families can use self-service).

4. For USA (and some other high profile) destinations,if your passport / visa details are missing from the booking or if you have been selected by security at random for additional screening.

5. If the flight has been tempoarily "suspended" (while in the "back office" load adjustments are being made, or split families are being seated together)

6. If the flight is "closed" (ie 30 mins before departure Short Haul / UK domestic or 60 mins long-haul).

7. If, (and this happens to our frequent flyers often, but most won't admit it!), the security questions relating to baggage are incorrectly answered! The thing is, that weknow because the computer tells us "Security Failure"!!!

Other than these situations, we do have a few "glitches", so please bear with us - pending another software "enhancement"!!!
