Let me also add: after reading the original post, I'm convinced the AA gate agents knew they done goofed. Since when are AA passengers ever given hotel vouchers unless its a major airline goof? That action alone has "guilty" stamped all over it.
like others have said, it does happen. it's an algo. if the two who were denied boarding were in their own PNRs, or two individual PNRs, vs everyone else in the group who didn't experience this, then it's highly likely this is why. Or that a person intervened, but it doesn't require a human if the computer calculates a couple passengers aren't likely to make their connection and others need to be on the plane
