Oh my. I'm not sure if this thread makes me want to laugh or cry.
I've just wasted a few minutes of my life Googling bed bugs vs sand flies / sand fleas. Based on my "research" and - admittedly - my total lack of entomological expertise ... it sure seems like the OP probably got bites from sand flies. (There's no point in getting into arguments over zig-zags versus not-zig-zags and lower extremeties versus upper body and ... whatever else. At this point, he'll probably never know for sure.)
Like I said above, though, it sure seems like a feasible explanation -- since I've suffered from those same bites before when walking on beaches and on grass in tropical places. Like lots of people.
Before we all jump to conclusions about a hotel being unsafe and bug-infested ... and start talk of threatening lawsuits and cautioning people that "what you say on Flyertalk can be used as an admission in court" ... well, consider that there's a really, really good chance that the guy just got bit by some sand flies while on vacation. Like happens to people every single day at in tropical areas and beach destinations.
This thread really just makes me feel bad for hotel staff at those locations who probably hear the same
"I have bug bites on my legs therefore your hotel must be infested with bed bugs" thing routinely.
