It was only after more research over the past couple of days that I am finding that it must have been bedbugs.

FlyerJ - thank you. Your experiences are interesting - I could certainly see that happening in some cases. However, since being back home we have been putting more things together as we learn more about bed bugs and it's looking less and less likely it could have been anything else but bed bugs.

The first 15 and then additional 16 different visible bites are not at random spacings like I would expect from ones encountered in the sand. They are in a clear bed bug pattern we have seen online where it is in a straight line and some zig-zag areas too. I wouldn't expect sand bugs to be in such a pattern without me noticing. I also didn't see any bugs during the trip on me which with 31 visible bug bites, I would have expected to see if I were awake while being bitten. While we didn't see any bed bugs in our room, we did see some small black spots in one of the bottom bed corners that we learned seem to look like the evidence of bed bug droppings. I also stayed out of the sand (and any grass) after the first day and 5 days later still had bites showing up. Given all these facts, I'd say the hotel's jump to the sand bug conclusion is more of a leap than it being actual bed bugs. It seems very much like a deny, deny, deny response from them.

The first 15 and then additional 16 different visible bites are not at random spacings = sand flies

straight line and some zig-zag areas too = sand flies

I also didn't see any bugs during the trip on me which with 31 visible bug bites = it doesn’t matter

I would have expected to see if I were awake while being bitten = no

I also stayed out of the sand (and any grass) after the first day and 5 days later = it doesn’t matter

still had bites showing up = typical from sand flies
