No Special meals ex LHR - policy or SNAFU?

Friend of mine recently flew LHR-ORD and had ordered a special meal.

He's flown AA TATL for years and never had an issue with geting his special meal until this month.

He spoke to AA a month before the flight to order the meal then checked his booking a week before and it indicated he had selected the special meal. At check in again the agent said it was ordered.

Yet on board he was told by a member of cabin crew that there was no meal as "AA now stocked all meals in the US there were no special meals if you were travelling from LHR".

On his return home he submitted a note to AA specifically asking if this was the case why wasn't he (and apparenrly anyone else with a special meal - told before hand so he could have self catered.

Of course he got a non apology apology totally ignoring his specific question.

So is no special meals ex LHR policy or was it just a snafu?

What are others experiences recently with special meals on ex LHR flights?
