It works well in most places, in some places where additional checks are needed and they do give you a BP they'll just call your name at the gate or you'll get a red bleep when you try to board.
Or they allow check-in but will no issue the board pass to the app or via email. Check-in usually works everywhere... but if a document check is required, most of the times you have to show up at the check-in counter. I think from my past MAN experiences online check-in and board pass to the app was not a problem, but I do have a EU-passport attached to my profile and of course was on my way back from UK to Scandinavia.
