I have the same problem and I admit it is my fault. I oversee a few family accounts and get so many emails from American Airlines that I missed that miles were going to expire (28,000+) in one of them. I did a search of my American Airlines emails for the past year+ and the emails are only for credit cards offers, trips to take, which I never open, etc. - only the one solitary email referred to the expiration of miles in that account and I missed it that day. Someone stated ample warning was received but I don't see that with one email. I discovered the expired miles when looking at possible trips.

The rest of the accounts have been extended until December 16 of this year but not that one. I contacted American Airlines but they will not return the miles. We can pay to have them reinstated but will not do that for the amount of money they want.

It is disappointing that a legacy carrier still has an expiration date on miles when none of the others do. I will admit I have blown an expiration on another airline and hotel in the past once but life sometimes gets in the way and things like miles expirations don't come to mind then. We haven't traveled since before the pandemic so have not looked at accounts until recently... my fault but geeeez. Many people have had a lot of other things on their minds the last few years and travel was certainly not one of them for us.

I do hope American Airlines will someday go the route of non-expiring miles. I can't imagine how much time, effort and ill will toward the company goes into talking to irate customers about their miles expiring.
