Following up on this thread, so I still have my 12 hour 7 minute connection in LAX on a purely domestic itinerary.

I may actually want to take my checked bag in LAX (still undecided), so two questions:

If I want AA to keep the bag and the computer won't let me, can I retrieve the bag at baggage claim and then go straight to check in and check the bag for the evening flight early in the morning (just under 12 hours before departure)?

If I do want the bag and the computer tries to check it through, will they allow me to short check it to be picked up at LAX or will that set off hidden city alarm bells? Ticket is not a one-way but RT MIA-PHX/PHX-LAX-MIA ticket, if it matters.
