Yes leaving the city might take some time but for example bus H-2 from Mecidiyeköy would not take more than 1h15mins ( normally takes 35-45 mins from first stop ) unless there is an accident as from the city it goes towards the opposite direction of the traffic flow.

Old airport and the Ataköy, Şirinevler, Basın Ekspres area is a total different story.
What about the Hava bus that stop close to Sheraton Ataköy? What about the traffic to and from there? I'll be landing at IST at 15:35 and my flight leaves the at 15:50 the next day.
