I have no info on Amansara, so can't give you any advice there. I can though strongly suggest that you try Amanjiwo, which along with Amankila, are my favorite Amans.
You also needn't be worried about travelling to Java. The people are generally very friendly, and the vast majority practice a form of Islam that would not be recognized as Islam at all in the muslim world, with significant Hindu and other polytheistic influences still very strong, and the intolerance largely absent. There are certainly exceptions though, as Arab influenced wahabbist Islam slowly creeps in and supplants local traditions in an unfortunate bit of cultural imperialism.
We had only one unpleasant episode while staying at Amanjiwo around 2 years ago. While eating dinner at the excellent Pak Parno's Restaurant in Borobudur Village (reputed to be Adrian Zecha's favorite), we were joined at our communal table by several young men, including one wearing a shirt emblazoned with Osama Bin Laden's picture. Despite this, he and his friends were quite friendly and anxious to talk to us about American pop stars and such. Rightly or wrongly, our sense of diplomacy prevented us from bringing up his shirt, or the offense it conveyed to us. Reflecting on this, while it could be that he wore the shirt to honor Bin Laden and show his support for mass murder, it might be more likely that he wore Bin Laden's picture much the way that ignorant youth in this country wear Che Guevara shirts, more as a symbol of their supposed rebelliousness as opposed to honoring a murderer. This episode aside, we felt no anti-Americanism whatsoever.
By the way, we were thinking of combining a trip to Losari with our next trip to Amanjiwo. How does it compare?
