Wondering for these two cases:
1) If I see a rate that a little more expensive than the base case but includes breakfast, should I book that rate instead of relying on the free breakfast from an Platinum member?
2) If I have a rate booked with free breakfast, should I always take the non-breakfast welcome amenity when I check in?
There shouldn't be a difference in breakfast options, but sometimes there is as Marriott doesn't enforce this as they should. If a given property is supposed to provide breakfast for member + 1 person staying with them, it should cover a reasonable full breakfast. FULL STOP. But these shenanigans are why the term "Bonvoyed" is turning into a verb and why this sticky post is so long...

Upon checking in to properties, I've seen different stacks of cards the front desk attendant can choose from or that guests are holding/place on the table. For example, from the Tribute property a couple of posts above this one, I received a Bonvoy logo card, but I saw a different property specific card that another guest used. I couldn't read what it said, but I presume that card was the one given when the guest booked a rate that included breakfast. What I was handed was an old Bonvoy card (printed in 2018 per the small print on the back) that offered continental breakfast -- which is NOT a current offering, nor was it even listed as an option on the hotel menu. At the restaurant, I ordered breakfast and when the bill arrived I was told it was valid for $15 x 2 people off the total, which wouldn't even cover juice, coffee and one other small item (like cereal or a muffin) -- hence my claim above that I am due the $100 compensation.

So if it's only $10 or so difference (maybe $20 if double occupancy), I might book the breakfast rate and take points as the amenity if I don't know if that property provides a full breakfast as the welcome amenity. FWIW, the 1,000 points are only worth at most $5 to me so this is usually the least valuable option to take at a property that you'll be having breakfast at (I only take points at hotels with a lounge or when I won't be having breakfast there)

If your rate already includes breakfast, you would normally want to elect points as your welcome gift, but it never hurts to nicely as if there are other options, such as ____<fill in the blank>. I've been to a couple of hotels where I knew I wouldn't be able to stay for breakfast (early meeting, having breakfast with a colleague, had a lounge, etc.) and I nicely asked if there was another option like a drink or two and was provided that instead. Anything other than points is YMMV, and completely up to the discretion of the property and/or the desk clerk (as it's considered an alternative welcome amenity), and I usually only ask this at properties I frequent...
