The problem I found with TFL rail (first time use a couple of months ago) were the larger gaps between trains and also that they only went to T5 at the weekends (not sure if that has changed) necessitating a transfer. Definitely a vote for London though - 6 hours is more than enough.
I think the TFL Elizabeth Line is now running to T5 during the week. I’m not sure how reliably it is doing so but it worked for me last Tuesday (April 19th) and is a pretty efficient option from Paddington.
More generally I’d also be in the “pop into London (or out to Windsor)” camp.
