With the previous upgrade system I had experiences where U inventory was released for a flight that I was waitlisted on. My waitlisted upgrade cleared immediately when seats in the U bucket became available.
With the new upgrade system I've personally not come across a situation where U inventory would have been released after the waitlist opened, even if J would have remained quite empty on the flight.
Interesting so if so then once U is exhausted any bookings made and then canceled the inventory if returned at all, goes to a different fare bucket. I wonder from where they pull, if they do at all, any further upgrades from. If one could monitor expert flyer or another source that showed the fare buckets, while at the same time canceling a booked upgrade I suppose you could unlock the key with a bit of luck.
