So to close this loop, the errant iPad arrived home today. Lessons learned:
- Don’t be so careless next time.
- Set up the Find My Device app. It worked surprisingly well, even when it was out of cellular and wifi range. There is a feature that allows you to send your contact info to the locked screen and sound a tone, but it appears that it needs a wifi connection to work, which the finder won’t be able to do if the screen is locked. Maybe if the iPad has a cellular card it works better.
- File a Lost Item Report. WestJet appears to contract this service out to something called Chargerback. (It seems there may be many lost chargers out there.)
- Be proactive. After filing the report I received at least three robo-emails prompting me to update the info. Even thought I did, telling them exactly where it was and how and when it got there, I didn’t hear anything via that route. It wasn’t until I independently made phone contact with the person at YYC who had it that a match was made between the found iPad and the Lost Item Report. It’s not clear what would have happened without that contact.
- If you have lost an iPad, there’s another found one at OGG. I have their direct number if you need it.
- Praise be upon the FlyerTalk community and the helpful crew member.
