I would go to the gate. In my experience, in general, for international flights, gate agents typically arrive somewhere around 90 minutes before departure. If it were me, I'd get to the gate more than 90 minutes ahead and wait for the GAs to arrive, because there are always issues such as yours to resolve, and the line for GAs can get long.
OK, worse case scenario: I arrive on AA domestic, leave security, check in at Fiji, and re-clear security. Trying to time the arrival flight. Is 3 hours enough for all this? The other option is 6 hours which seems too long but builds in a cushion for delays, etc.
