No checks at LAX on the way back, so long as you stay airside. There are living organism checks in HNL though, not that these are a big deal. For baggage, you can ask it to go whereever you like, and with difficulty you can change that location later on too. And as is always the way with checked baggage, you should assume a 48 hour delay on baggage, in terms of what is in your cabin bags, no matter what the routing.
