As LAX will be your port on entry to USA you will need to process immigration and clear customs *with* all your hand and checked bags.
Is a bag drop after exiting border control. A post a week or so ago suggested may be as quick to go the normal check in/ security (due to congestion issues).

There's another route via SEA with a 3h connection, I guess that'd be easier. But SEA-HNL is operated by AS on a Boeing 737MAX and I don't feel comfortable at all in that aircraft!!
