That's what I thought too until I found out that you can't select seat for free even at check-in (although there appears to be a loophole that can circumvent this on some occasions). Luckily, there was a free aisle seat next to my middle seat so I was able to switch but I've learned my lesson to never book Go Light without EBG/EBD status.
When travelling Go Light, I have always been able to select a seat online
after check-in opens but
before I check in myself.
So once online check-in is open (STD minus 22hrs or 30hrs or whatever it is) view your booking, and select seat (as if you were going to pay for it). You can select a seat for free and then proceed to check-in as normal. This works fine on the web but not in the app. Obviously, because nothing works in the app.
(Edit to clarify: I'm EB Silver... so free seat selection is definitely being granted because of my status).
