The Al Maha is quoting 340AED each way for the low end, which is $92. Your option is certainly cheaper. Booking through the hotel is just the lazy-man option... paying a higher rate for the simplicity. Plus if something goes wrong, there's more pressure on the hotel to resolve it since they're the ones handling it (they don't actually do the driving, but they hire them out).
