In theory, you can check in with FJ at the gate air side - a good portion of FJ's passengers at LAX are connecting from domestic flights so they must know some of them will check in air side. But in practice, I don't know when FJ opens the counter at the gate and staffs it so I can't say for sure if you will be able to do it air side.
