If you believe you should qualify for free advance seat selection you’ll probably need to call AF to get it sorted… I’ve DM’d with them on Twitter in the past but the conversation took DAYS because they are extremely slow to respond.
ETA: most passengers on my AF flights wait until checking to get seats in economy/premium economy so you should be ok as long as you check in early in the checkin window… or bite the bullet and pay the fee if you don’t want to risk it.
I can confirm this... I bought Economy tickets for MSP-CDG-BOM-CDG-MSP. The MSP <-> CDG flights are operated by DL and I was able to select Comfort+ seats (as DL Platinum) for myself and my travel companion (on the same itinerary). On the CDG <-> BOM flights, operated by AF, I was able to select Seat Plus and Exit Row seats for free for myself, but for $ my travel companion (no DL status). However, I was able to select regular seats on the AF flight for both of us for free, in advance.
Initially (right after ticketing), I wasn't able to select seats on the DL website. I had to go to the AF website, plug-in my confirmation number and select seats for the AF flight which got reflected immediately on the DL trip details page. About 2 days are ticket purchase, I am able to see the AF seating charting on the DL website and follows the same rules for seat selection as the AF website.
