Then you were simply "lucky."

I (and pretty much most others here who are part-time FOTSGs) have been on flights where my entire row is empty. And on many where the middle seat of 3-abreast are occupied while I'm the window or row seat.
Your chances of having a next-door neighbour increase drastically during IRROPs, among other situations.

It didn't matter what type of metal it was.
