I stayed at Times square edition in Jan. The rooms are very very small. I upgraded (another £250ish a night) to a decent room. I had breakfast included and got charged for it. Great location but very urban. I'd probably go a bit further north to be honest. I would not be in a hurry to go back to the times square edition.

I have also done trips where I have gone in and out of NY but got trains to Washington or Boston (Acela express). Well worth doing. Much easier than flying imo.

If going to Boston you must walk round Harvard. Honestly feels a bit like Oxford (but obviously nowhere near as old).

DC is totally walkable and an amazing place to go. Standing at the exact point where MLK did his speech left me in a very reflective mood (I have also been to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis), DC over Boston IMO.
