I would 2nd the Washington DC idea. As a regular NYC visitor over the years I tended to book hotels that were close to subway links to allow your to buzz around, I've avoided booking hotels immediately in the Times Square area due to noise etc, Your hotel is basically a base for your holiday so tended to go for those with the best bed :-)
