The advice of asking at the gate is good.

I'm sorry that your first experience with AS is not going more smoothly. It's usually a pretty good airline.

Can I ask where you are flying? That difference between saver and main is huge; it usually tops out at $40 or $50 per direction (usually less on shorter flights) but on connecting flights it can sometimes (not always) be applied per segment.
