The automated kiosks, which used to be for both ESTA visitors and US citizens (in the same queue), were gone when I landed at ORD on December 28, so we had to scramble to fill in the paper custom forms while queuing up for immigration. I asked the CBP officer who processed me what happened to them as they used to be great, and ORD had been the first US airport to deploy them, and she just shrugged. I landed at PHL three weeks ago and surprisingly the kiosks were all still there, fully working, so go figure. I was literally the only person in the immigration hall at PHL at that time, and it took me less than a minute to get through, most of which I spent chatting with the friendly CBP officer lol.
