You don’t need a taxi to NCE, it’s very well served by public transport. There’s a direct train from Cannes to a station almost outside the airport as well. Leave your bags at the hotel and enjoy a day on the beach before flying home, but whatever you do don’t spend 8 hours at the airport.
With two small kids I think a taxi may be preferred.
Regardless, if all the earlier flights are cancelled then it's unlikely BA will accept bags more than 2-3 hours in advance of the flight anyway, so it would be a long day landside at the airport
