I would call BA back as you should able to choose seats normally even on flights waiting to be ticketed. The agent who booked you should also offered you to book into seats whatever is possible with your status, or at least advise you when you could do it for free and when and how much is the paid seats. If you call you could also query the fare breakdown and ask the agent what can be the difference between your online quote and the telephone one.
