As Guy Betsy wrote, your bags will be sent to SFO with you, not to YVR.

You must claim them and proced through US Customs before re-checking for your connecting flight.

Feel free to book a connecting flight and check in all the way in SYD. Once in SFO, claim your bags, clear customs and head home.
